The Friday Feel Good Quick Mix for June 7th
Fry decided to strap on a Red Codpiece like the one Larry Blackmon wore on his videos and get down on the 1’s and 2’s… I was just clownin’ him, but it is all in the fun..”Word Up” is a saying that was popular in New York and other urban areas in the US that acted as an affirmation of what was said, kind of a hipper “You Bet.” Cameo developed a character around the saying and wrote the lyrics about what he would say. They called the character “Vicious” and had him take out his frustrations on artist who delve into psychodrama when they should be creating music you can dance to: “Give us music we can use it we need to dance, We don’t need that type of psychological romance.” “Word Up” was Cameo’s first of two top 40 pop hits (the followup “Candy” was the other one). It served as the title tune to the group’s first platinum album. Before this massive success, Cameo collected seven gold albums and several top 10 r&b hits. Fry, also mixed in a song by Junior, “Mama Used To Say”. This song was a 1 Hit wonder for Junior. Junior was one of the first British R&B artists to be successful in the United States. “Mama Used to Say” was also a Top 40 Pop hit and Top 5 R&B in the United States, earning him a “Best Newcomer” award from Billboard magazine. This is one of my Favorite Jams of the early 80’s
